What Is Dry Eye Syndrome? (DES)

Dry eye is a common condition that occurs when your tears can't provide adequate lubrication for your eyes. This can happen for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Not producing enough tears: This can be caused by several factors, such as age, medications, and certain medical conditions.
  • Producing poor-quality tears: Problems with the meibomian glands disrupt the production of the oily layer of the tear film.
  • Tears evaporate too quickly: Dry air, wind, and some medications can cause this problem.

What Causes Dry Eyes?

  • Blocked oil glands (meibomian gland dysfunction) are a primary cause. Other factors include
  • Gender
  • Age (more common after 50)
  • Environmental conditions
  • Medications
  • Certain health conditions such as Sjorgen’s syndrome
